As in Fallout (the video game series), or something beyond that?

Vault boy, something about being able to cover a mushroom cloud with your thumb. If you can, you’ll survive if you can’t your dead.

Pardon my overt cynicism, but to my question, I guess the answer is “largely meaningless.”
![]() 06/07/2018 at 17:14 |

So the question was rhetorical? I’m confused then as to the point of it then.

No, I’m just trolling my feelings about games. Role playing, first person shooters, and so on. There’s a lot of irony dispensed on this board and I am always trying to sharpen my skills. Don’t be shy about saying WUT?

You don’t like fallout and the like?
![]() 06/07/2018 at 17:50 |

No, I don’t, but I could have saved you all my snark.

What games (if any) are you into?
![]() 06/07/2018 at 18:06 |

Duolingo, 2048 and crossword puzzles. I played Plants v. Zombies for a season until I’d beaten it a couple of times — I was pretty good at it — then I got bored with it.
I could have spared everyone my snark. I am a middle school teacher and I worry greatly about what these devices and these role playing games are doing to create/bend reality. How long before Activision comes out with CALL OF DUTY: Sandy Hook? I worry about that stuff.

I totally worry about that stuff. For me, fallout is all about the amazingly cool universe and lore.
I play a lot of Cities XL, Forza or Civ with my wife.

I don’t judge you FWIW. And you’re grown. A friend of mine, who’s known as Fly Norcal on Oppo, brought over his new track racing video game and I tried it out. I discovered that if you take a Koenigsegg and hold the throttle on the floor, it is undriveable.

I received Fallout 4 as a gift back when it came out. I just don’t think that RPGs are for me. They just feel too much like, I don’t know, work? I’m not sure. Having to travel long distances over a huge map and constantly worry about your “economy” and dying just doesn’t do it for me.
I’m really into simulators and strategy games, though.

We could just point to the D&D players back in the day, as well as any of the other pencil and paper make believe games, that presented choices to the players and as how that is represented today and if it’s in any way similar to the gaming then, or if its more similar to the basket ball bouncing of the FPS and candy crush garbage games.
there are strategys at play in quite a few present games but I see what you see. Nothing really constructive in the most popular games. They’ll realize it. They’ll see a few of their games, one after another, go unsuported in a few years each and then they see htey have nothing to show for their energy over the last 10-15 years of building the awesome garage, or the awesome team, or the awesome lvl.60 warcraft character....whats left? They’ll get it. Unfortunately not until they’re 35

As in holding your thumb out? If an atomic bomb went off and the mushroom cloud is blocked out by your thumb and an outreached arm you are supposed to be safe from the blast. If you can see it around your thumb, well goodbye.

Which part of it? The character is Vault Boy from the Fallout universe. The gear is from the doors to the vaults that are gear shaped and roll.

Early Fallout was great. I used to carry around ridiculous rifles and almost always took the otherwise-pointless bloody mess perk so people would blow apart when I killed them.
Prior to stupid Bethesda buying the franchise, it was a third person turn-based game, which meant you didn’t aim at targets beyond selecting what your character would attempt for (I always focused on stats that increased my ranged accuracy and damage).

Post-Bethesda versions of the universe are nowhere near as good. The only decent FPS Fallout is New Vegas...

I haven’t a clue.

Or they’ll lose interest. And discover they’ve misspent their youth and have no skills and be unemployable.

SRSLY? For realz?

Thanks. Must be popular, though.

Sort of. Until recent years when it was revived, it was from a mostly-unknown cult classic RPG...

Wait really?

This is pretty absurd, Mr. fun police. Games are games, they’re fun and can be mentally stimulating. Playing them in and of itself doesn’t cause any issues. If you feel kids play too much, blame the parents for not policing it.
Call of Duty, Fallout, and many other “violent” games do come with a Mature rating, like an R rated movie. They’re made for adults, it’s really not the game studios fault they’re often played by kids.
Besides, having grown up in an era where gaming became very popular myself and many of my peers came out well educated, well adjusted, and had fun playing games along the way and to this day.

You are entitled to spend — or misspend — your life any way you like. I was having a snarky day yesterday. There is no upside to first person shooter games, IMHO, but that’s just my opinion.

God I wish. I am sure if it was I would be making a lot more money.
But no, I am just a history buff (college degree I know isn’t useful unless I teach or become Indiana Jones) and so I know lots of fun facts and such. Plus the cold war and raise of nuclear power interests me.

Ever thought of becoming an educator?

I think about it here and there. I would need to do a bit more schooling for that though.

No upside to fun? Exploring a new world, experiencing a story?
Everyone wastes time occasionally, don’t act like you’re immune to it.

Remember, the only difference between a high-school senior and a college freshman is three months.
As an assistant professor (the starting rank), most of the classes you teach are for incoming freshmen. I was lucky enough to start teaching seniors and grad students after my first year. The freshmen were, in many cases, just awful. The seniors made up for it.
